Electronics and Instrumentation Technologist (Burnaby, BC)

An exciting opportunity exists in our Burnaby research facility for an energetic and committed staff member in the field of Electronics and Instrumentation. The successful candidate will support laboratory operations serving a diverse range of industrial clients from traditional oil and gas, mining, cleantech and chemical processing, among others.

The core responsibilities of the position are to purchase, install and configure instrumentation; build data acquisition systems on experimental rigs; and troubleshoot existing systems and experimental rigs. Due to the wide variety of experiments performed at Coanda, new instrumentation is always being introduced. Coanda operates several specialized laboratory instruments as well, including Phase-Doppler Interferometers, rheometers, laser diffraction-based particle sizers, x-ray systems, etc. Setup, use, maintenance and troubleshooting of these systems is also part of the job.

In addition to the core instrumentation program, the position offers many opportunities for technical growth. As needed, we program micro controllers, develop circuit boards, program PLCs, and develop motion control systems. In any of these areas, where there is interest and ability, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop skills and contribute.

The nature of the contract work Coanda does requires employees to be flexible in their roles. At any point, we may have various rigs under construction and few running experiments, or vice versa. As such, we move laterally and do what it is required for the work at hand. Experience with plumbing, building, machining, etc. is valuable and a willingness to learn more is essential.

  • A degree or diploma in a relevant area: Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Technologist Diplomas are both great, however a different scientific or technical program that heavily used electronics could also be sufficient.
  • Candidates must be fluent in English with good written communication.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with analog and digital electronics
  • Wiring, soldering and electrical fabrication
  • Troubleshooting electrical noise and grounding issues
  • Configuration and setup of electronic equipment

Benefits available to our employees:

  • RRSP matching
  • Health spending account
  • Dental, vision and extended health coverage
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage
  • Life Insurance and AD&D
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Paid time off for sick days and medical reasons

This is an on-site job at Coanda’s Burnaby facility; however, some travel may be required to our Edmonton facility to support projects on an as needed, but infrequent basis. Participating in field projects at customer’s facilities is also a possibility for this position.

Coanda is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We invite resumes from all interested parties including women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and members of visible minorities.

We thank all those that apply; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
