Instrumentation / Data Scientist

A challenging opportunity exists in our Edmonton, AB facility for an Instrumentation Scientist with a Data Science background. The successful candidate will engage in advanced research and development projects over a wide range of industrial sectors and technologies.

The key responsibilities will include:

  • Determining the physical quantities that need to be measured in an experimental system to characterize the physics
  • Designing the measurement system to collect data on the above. This may include
    • Specification of commercially available instrumentation
    • Adaptation of existing instrumentation for non-standard applications
    • Development of new instrumentation from scratch
  • Writing data analysis packages that allow non-expert users to extract relevant information from complex datasets
  • Learning the fundamentals of how each instrument works to determine its utility in new applications and correctly interpret data
  • Working with our mathematical modeling and data science team on algorithm development and other advanced data science methods and analysis
  • Writing report content and memos related to the design and execution of measurement and control schemes.
  • Specifying, procuring, calibrating, commissioning, and maintaining:
    • Data acquisition systems
    • Distributed wiring and control systems
    • Commercial instrumentation
    • Analytical equipment
    • Process equipment such as pumps, compressors, valves, motors, drives, etc.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Circuit board level debugging
    • Process and analytical instrumentation diagnosis and repair
    • Electrical noise and grounding issues between AC power and distributed data acquisition systems
  • Design, fabrication, and assembly of custom components, circuits, housings and enclosures, etc.
  • Working closely with project managers and other research scientists to execute projects accurately and on time.
  • Compiling and maintaining well-organized data reporting & documentation: lab books, data tables, circuit diagrams, photographs, etc.
  • Data collection, sample analysis, and general laboratory support and assistance

Required skills and experience:

  • Eagerness to learn new skills
  • Critical thinker
  • Sound understanding of analog and digital electronics systems and wiring techniques
  • Experience with troubleshooting noise and grounding problems in data acquisition systems
  • Data science and mathematical modeling experience
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing instrumentation
  • Operation and maintenance of sensitive lab equipment
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, process equipment, and fabrication (shop experience)
  • Working safely in a lab & industrial environment
  • Attention to detail and strong organization skills
  • Strong data analysis experience using Excel and Python/Matlab (or similar language)

Additional (preferred) skills and experience:

  • Higher-level software coding (object oriented programming, GUIs)
  • PCB design and rework (surface mount and through hole desoldering, cutting and patching traces on boards)
  • Use of microcontrollers and embedded electronics (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, PLCs)
  • Programming and commissioning of Siemens motor controllers/drives
  • Experiments using ionising radiation or radioactive tracers
  • Presenting talks/posters at conferences/meetings
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Photography, videography, lighting and camera setup

Qualification requirements:

  • Master’s, Doctorate or commensurate experience specializing in measurement science, engineering, experimental hard-science, or equivalent
  • 3+ yrs research experience with instrumentation, electronics and lab techniques in a scientific or industrial environment
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Excellent written and communication skills

This is an on-site job at Coanda’s Edmonton; however some travel may be required to our Burnaby facility to support projects on an as-needed, but infrequent basis. Participating in field projects at customer’s facilities is also a possibility for this position.
