ESSENTIAL TO LIFE

Clean, safe water—whether it is treated wastewater, reclaimed water from industrial processes, or water from natural sources—is an essential commodity in our economy and for life itself. Coanda has a track record of providing support for effective water treatment, biodegradation, contaminant release, custom analytical and instrumentation systems, and design of efficient water transport and wastewater facilities.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND WATER SUPPLY

In the initial design of new wastewater treatment and water pumping facilities, or the expansion of existing ones, CFD is of particular benefit as it can quickly and accurately predict free surface flows through basins and influent/discharge structures. There are many instances in such facilities that involve geometry of sufficient complexity for which a basic hydraulic analysis does not accurately account for flow non-uniformities or losses through more complex openings and screens. In these instances, CFD simulations provide high-resolution details of the flow and how it will affect the intended process—often completely de-risking the design before it is implemented.

BIODEGRADATION AND CONTAMINANT RELEASE

Microbial degradation can be a relatively slow process that requires novel long-term experiments to link mass transfer, rheology, consolidation behaviour, and water chemistry. Validated models from such experiments can be used, for instance, to predict pond evolution. Similarly, vapour containment release from a tailings deposit can be determined utilizing unique measurement techniques which allow comparison with mechanistic models of the system and eventual deployment of commercial solutions. Coanda has direct experience in both of these types of systems.

CUSTOM ANALYTICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEMS

Coanda has worked with industry to develop standardized analytical approaches for unique hydrocarbon measurements and a novel tracking technique for water systems that involves special tritiated compounds. Additionally, we have developed custom instruments for measurements in complex flotation streams and then utilized AI systems to extract data from instrument images to implement a commercial system for on-line control.
