Coanda researchers Dr. Amarebh Sorta & Benito Moyl $Coanda researchers Dr. Amarebh Sorta & Benito Moyls will be presenting at the upcoming 78th Canadian Geotechnical Conference, GeoManitoba 2025; hosted by The Canadian Geotechnical Society in collaboration with the Canadian Permafrost Association. The conference will be held at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada from Sunday, September 21 to Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Their paper, titled "Time Scaling Law for Two-stage Centrifuge Testing" presents time-scaling laws for calculating prototype times in two-stage centrifuge testing, and it also provides centrifuge testing and numerical modelling results for validating the scaling law. Introduction: Coanda and Suncor developed a small-scale beam centrifuge, called the PASS centrifuge, to address traditional beam centrifuges' cost and availability limitations for industrial use (Sorta et al., 2024). This innovation enables the routine application of beam centrifuges in industrial settings and evaluates the consolidation of numerous samples in a short time at a fraction of the cost of traditional beam centrifuge tests. It also aids the monitoring and assessment of commercial tailings operations. This paper continues to address the limitations of beam centrifuges by presenting a test method designed to mitigate segregation issues during centrifuge tests. It outlines techniques for reducing segregation and introduces time-scaling laws to interpret centrifuge model results in terms of real-world prototypes, filling a gap in the existing literature which lacks theoretical derivations or experimental investigations into scaling laws for self-weight consolidation in two-stage centrifuge testing. A non-dimensional consolidation time factor is employed to derive the time-scaling laws, which are subsequently validated through centrifuge testing and large-strain consolidation modelling. #geotechnical #centrifuge #research #conference #scientist #innovation$
