Coanda Contributes to Petroleum Book

Posted on April 29, 2026

Coanda Calgary team members, Dr. Danuta Szutowski and Dr. Elco Hollander have contributed two chapters to the recently published “Cleaner Petroleum Production And Refining Technologies” book by Wiley.

This accomplishment reflects their technical expertise, industry insight, and commitment to advancing knowledge in the field. We’re excited to see their work recognized in a publication that will contribute to ongoing discussions and best practices across the industry.

Chapter Abstracts:

Chapter 5 – Energy Intensity in Mineable Oil Sands

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the energy intensity of mineable oil sands processing. The evolution of the process flowsheet since the first commercial deployment in 1967 is described, detailing process improvements in mining, ore preparation, primary extraction, and froth treatment. Further continuous improvement opportunities related to hydrocarbon recovery from tailings, modular plant design, and resource optimization are discussed. Step-out technologies that intend to materially change the greenhouse gas emission profile of these operations are presented.

Chapter 6- Tailings and Waste Management in Mineable Oil Sands

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the management of tailings and other waste streams, and the resulting greenhouse gas intensity, during the operational and reclamation phases of a mineable oil sands facility. Examples of commercially deployed treatment technologies are provided to illustrate the tension between operational, reclamation, regulatory, and economic requirements. Challenges related to long-term geo-environmental performance of tailings deposits are discussed for the various tailings products that are currently commercially deployed or under consideration for future implementation. Energy intensity for material handling and treatment of tailings and oil sands process-affected water is discussed.
